Prediabetes News

An April 18, 2011 article by Nancy A. Melville, reported that study findings show a clear link between type 2 diabetes and hypothyroid conditions (low thyroid.)  “Just as a diagnostic thyroid profile is typically taken on patients with type 1 diabetes, those with type 2 should also receive a thyroid screening, researchers said here on April 15 at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) 20th Annual Meeting and Clinical Congress.”

Study findings showed:

“The cross-sectional study comparing 1,848 adult patients with type 2 diabetes with 3,313 individuals without diabetes, showed the prevalence of hypothyroidism on the study group to be 5.7% compared with 1.8% in the control group (P ≤.0001).”

Mary Shomon, About.com writer for thyroid disorders, wrote in 2007 that research has also shown a link between hypothyroidism and metabolic syndrome.  Shomon states:

“The link between overt hypothyroidism and an increased risk of heart disease has already been established. But research published in the February 2007 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found a connection between thyroid function and metabolic syndrome in people who have normal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels.”
