Maybe Girls Should Drink More Milk And Boys Should Play More Team Sports
Middle school-aged boys that participate on a sports team appear to have a reduced risk of obesity; girls of the same age who also participate in team sports do not appear to have any reduced risk. However, the same study indicated that girls who drank milk had greater protection against obesity than girls who did not drink milk.
- Sports-team activity reduced obesity risk in boys by 23%
- Drinking milk reduced obesity risk in girls of the same age by 19%.
The study findings reported by Dr. Elizabeth Jackson, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Michigan School of Medicine was published online August 12, 2013 and will also appear in the September print edition of Pediatrics.
