About The Diet

Slim Fast LogoSlimFast started with meal-replacement shakes, but now is a full weight-loss plan. Sort of. SlimFast’s meal plan has a good balance of complex carbs, proteins and healthier fats. The diet plan lets you eat about 1,200 calories a day, however, you still need to purchase their products and replace real meals with one of their products:

…”Just replace two meals a day with a nutritious and filling SlimFast shake or bar, and treat yourself to one other healthy meal. You can even add up to three 100 calorie snacks! Enjoy it at home, on-the-go, or at work!” (Source: SlimFast website)

SlimFast claims that by following their plan you can lose about ten percent of your body weight in six months, the problem is by relying on their products you really do not learn how to manage portions and balance three meals a day.

If you like sweet-tasting things, however, SlimFast products generally taste good, but for some folks, that’s a bad thing. One chocolate shake for a meal is not all the filling and could lead to cheating or consumption of more shakes and bars than are permitted on this calorie-reduced, meal replacement plan.

Their website does offer some examples of balanced meals, but is more of a recipe resource than nutritional resource, and a poor recipe resource at that. As of this review, there were only 21 meal recipes, and the remaining 26 recipes were for “mocktails” and smoothies.

If you want to really learn how to balance your meals and making independent healthy choices, you may wish to consider Weight Watchers. The upside is that this plan may be cheaper to follow than Jenny Craig or NutriSystem, two other commercial plans that require you to purchase and consume prepackaged food.
