Other Metabolic Disorders Associated with Pre-diabetes and Insulin Resistance
Other conditions may cause, be exacerbated, or result from insulin resistance. It is important for your doctor to take a complete medical history for you, and for family members as some disorders can be hereditary in nature. Be sure to tell your doctor if any family members have autoimmune disorders, metabolic disorders, or other serious health problems like cancer, heart disease, or high blood pressure or cholesterol.
In addition to the potential for diabetes, other disorders that may also be present with either insulin resistance, Metabolic Syndrome X, pre-diabetes, or diabetes type 1 or 2 include:

- Addison’s Disease
- Asthma and allergies
- Celiac Disease (sprue, or gluten intolerance)
- Cushing’s Syndrome
- Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS)
- Cystic Fibrosis (CF) (which can lead to CF-related diabetes)
- Eating Disorders
- Erectile Dysfunction
- Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS)
- Frozen Shoulder (though more common in persons with diabetes)
- Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
- Hemochromatosis (also called “iron overload” or “bronze diabetes”)
- Infertility
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Weight Loss or Weight Gain (while not a metabolic disorder itself, rapid, or unexplained changes in weight may be the sign of another underlying medical problem)
